Nello Castellano, developer of DZX STUDIO

About the author

Nello Castellano

Software architect. Product developer. Based in Singapore.

Nello is the developer behind DZX STUDIO, a native Mac development environment for the ZX Spectrum 48K and 128K.

He has worked in software since 1982, starting with CP/M. His first computer was a Commodore 64, a gift from his father. A ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, Toshiba MSX and Amiga 500 followed, before he moved to 8086 PCs running MS-DOS.

He learned to program in C on UNIX and began working with Perl in 1996. From there, he went on to work with the modern technologies that power the web and today’s devices.

How he builds

Applied AI is part of his day-to-day engineering practice. He uses language models and coding agents, including Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, to support implementation, refactoring, documentation and testing. Architecture, integration, evaluation and final acceptance remain human responsibilities.

His technical teaching follows the same practical approach: worked examples, simulations and tests that help developers understand what they are building and check the results.

Background

He holds a Specialist Diploma in Full Stack Web Development from Singapore Polytechnic (2019–2020). His ongoing work explores LLM integration, retrieval-augmented generation, structured outputs and human-in-the-loop workflows.
